It’s now three weeks since the Deep Creek fire began, two and a half weeks since SAVEM was activated and 15 days SAVEM has spent on fireground. We continue to find injured animals in what have been identified as the hottest and most savage parts of the fireground. We are relieved PIRSA approved an extension to our two week activation. As we keep reminding people, this is to be expected and is typical for a wildlife-centric fire, where animals seek shelter in places of refuge, and emerge looking for food and water days and weeks later. SAVEM’s vets, veterinary nurses and other supporting volunteers are working tirelessly to uphold the animal welfare standards expected by the community, and of course by the veterinary profession. Vets are required by legislation to uphold very high standards of animal welfare, and SAVEM vets take that very seriously. Thanks to DEW and the SA CFS for supporting SAVEM’s operation, as well as individuals from Yankalilla Council, Matt and Liz from Second Valley Cottages and importantly, the local Deep Creek community.
