Training Requirements
Key message
Volunteers are expected to attend at least 50% of training events for which they are eligible. In any one year, this must include at least one of the following:
- Level 1
- Exercise Respond
- Pre-season Operational Update
Keeping up to date with training means that we:
- Maintain our skills
- Work well together as a team
- Understand our roles and responsibilities
- Understand the safety issues around the activity
Please re-read the article on the News page (23 November 2021) which clearly outlines the need to maintain currency and competency. You can find the article here.
The training program is designed around three components:
1. Mandatory – three parts
-
- Online Modules
- Level 1 Workshop
- Fireground safety video – to be viewed at the start of every fire season
Everyone must complete Online and Level 1 and view the video to be eligible to attend ANY other training OR be deployed in a SAVEM response.
SAVEM Level 1 attendance is valid for three years, at which point Level 1 competency lapses and must be renewed.
2. General components
General components are training events listed on the SAVEM training calendar other than the Mandatory events listed above. All eligible active members will receive invitations to attend. You should aim to attend at least 50% of these events. Attendance is valid for two years, after which competency lapses and must be renewed.
3. Targeted
Targeted training events are designed to address the need for particular skills, or have limited places available. For example, four-wheel drive training will be targeted to those experienced, active, long-term members only, as places and funding are limited.
Training invitations will be sent to all eligible volunteers. If you do not receive an invitation to a training event on the calendar that you would like to attend, please contact us to discuss – personal initiative is highly valued at SAVEM.
Your SAVEM Training Team are all volunteers. The team meets frequently and works hard to provide training opportunities. Training attendance is taken into account when selecting volunteers to send on deployment to an incident. The SAVEM Coordinator in consultation with the Training Team reserves the right to include or exclude any volunteer’s participation in a response.
