SAVEM’s Radio Comms training was successfully held on 29 October at St John’s Church Hall, Coromandel Valley. Thanks to SA Country Fire Service (CFS) for assisting with training content, and to the Wireless Institute Civil Emergency Network (WICEN) for lending SAVEM hand-held UHF radios to enable realistic training. Trainees also gained familiarity with the identical-model UHF radios in the Jeep (SAVEM 1) and the Hilux (SAVEM 2). Participants in this fully subscribed session were expertly trained by Training Team members Steve and Kathy, who wrote and developed this training module. Good communications are critical for safety on a natural hazard incident ground – it is imperative SAVEM volunteers understand and practise the essentials of effective radio communications.
