SAVEM would like to share some positive news from Kangaroo Island. Although this news was received prior to the impact of COVID19 upon all of us, we believe it is important not to lose sight of the events which shaped our lives earlier in the year during the horrific fires of summer 2019/2020. Earlier in March Hanson Bay Wildlife Sanctuary (https://www.hansonbay.com.au/) released a media statement which is posted (with permission) below. In January, Pelican Lagoon Research & Wildlife Centre sent some heartening reports of wildlife activity at sights they are monitoring, which they are also happy to share. Yesterday, the Australian Wildlife Conservancy (@awconservancy) posted on Twitter: “The endangered Kangaroo Island Dunnart has been caught on camera for the 1st time in their feral predator-free critical refuge – built last month by Kangaroo Island Land for Wildlife, local landowners & AWC.” SAVEM has been officially stood down from the Kangaroo Island response, and although we can’t move around as freely as we would like at the moment due to COVID19, we are continuing to help where we can. With the enthusiastic assistance of Rosefield Community Shed (https://www.rosefieldcs.org.au) and Southern Woodworkers Shed Inc.we have an ongoing project to help supply bird nesting boxes and insect & bee hotels to several places on the Island. We look forward to returning to Kangaroo Island later in the year.
