Biodiversity in a PPRR context

The perception of SAVEM’s activities are inevitably set by our Response activities, but the scope of our work is across all phases of Emergency Management (Prevention Preparedness Response Recovery) and extends to include the One Health concept. One Health states that human, animal and environmental health and welfare are intricately related.
SAVEM’s State control centre enables our resources to be stored, managed, prepared and maintained as response ready. It provides a site for some of our (small and specialist) training, and Incident Management Team.
Our Mobile Care Centre vehicle will be located at SAVEM base, and this required some repairs to the existing sheds. The old sheds housed a family of Common Brushtail possums, who needed to be relocated. SAVEM sought advice from Dr James Smith of Faunature, and installed eight possum boxes near the shed site to provide alternative shelter. The Common Brushtail possum is endangered in many parts of its former range, making it crucial to support and protect this species wherever it is still present.
This winter, 60 locally indigenous plants have been added to the SAVEM base surrounds to continue building and restoring habitat for local wildlife. With thanks to Gondwana Landscapes who have assisted with plant species selection and planting.
